Review: Clockwork Angel, by Cassandra Clare

by: Andrea
★★★☆☆
Book summary:  Magic is dangerous - but love is more dangerous still…
When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray arrives in England during the reign of Queen Victoria, something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Friendless and hunted, Tessa seeks refuge with the Shadowhunters, a band of warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by – and torn between – two best friends, and quickly realizes that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.
Review:
So Clockwork Angel is the first part of the Infernal Devices series, which is the prequel to the Mortal Instruments series. The first thing that attracted me to the book was the fact that it takes place during Victorian England, and reading about that era always makes me happy.
I liked the characters from the beginning, but I found that some things were very similar to The Mortal Instruments. For example, Will’s attitude at the beginning reminded me a bit of Jace, although we can all agree that Will’s reactions are far more extreme than Jace’s. Also, the fact that Tessa’s life wasn’t in fact what she though it was reminded me of Clary, and her discovery of the Shadowhunter world.
What I liked in this one, though, is the fact that the love triangle involves two best friends and that makes it far more complicated (well, sort of, I guess it’s complicated when you think the one you love is your brother, ANYWAY.. GOING BACK TO THE REVIEW).
I have to admit that I didn’t like how Will and Tessa “looked” together, and liked Jem a lot more, because he was a lot nicer to her. But Will intrigued me so much it only took like 30 seconds after I finished this book before I boughtClockwork Prince on my Kindle.
I don’t want to give a lot away, but I think this novel was good, but not as good as I thought it would be. The Mortal Instruments, in my opinion, was more exciting than this one. HOWEVER, and I don’t want to spoil anything here, the excitement takes place in the second book, Clockwork Prince, which I’m currently reading and can’t put down.
This book’s going to my favorites section, but I hoped it would be better.
You should definitely give it a read!
